Victoria—great question. Part of me feels like choosing pizazz over story is a disservice to ourselves. Story is the more satiating of the two, personally speaking.
Sometimes (and this isn't always the case) the flashier elements take over any efforts to craft a story, and it's flash for the sake of capturing attention, even if there's nothing to say. It's done in the service of something that's 'cool,' or what will thought to be cool.
